Goodyear Cup Final: Swilers vs Dogs

The Goodyear Cup will be awarded this Saturday after a fantastic 2017 rugby season. The Swilers will host the Dogs in a repeat of the last pool match of the season, which saw the Swilers defeating the Dogs 30-19 on September 30 to secure home advantage for the playoffs. Last Saturday, October 7th, the semi-finals saw the Dogs came back against the Baymen in a thrilling 41-36 victory. The Swilers took on the Vandals and despite a close first half the Swilers ran away with it 74-12. Setting up the final with the 1st place Swilers taking on the 2nd place Dogs. The Swilers, lead by captain Matthew Smallwood, are looking to secure their 15th consecutive Goodyear Cup, but the Dogs, lead by captain Jordan Power, definitely have some bite in them and are poised to bring the streak to an end.

This year’s Goodyear Cup crowns not only the best premier men’s side in Newfoundland, but gets to advance to the National Club Championships. The Newfoundland Champs will take on the winner from the Martime Provinces next Labour Day. That winner will move into the top four Men’s Premier clubs that battle it out next Thanksgiving.

The Dogs have an edge in the forward pack with a very strong and experienced tight five. With four of the eight starting forwards as Atlantic Rock staples, the forwards are going to be strong on the ball and in generating turnovers at the breakdown.

Players to watch out for on the Dogs are prop Steve ‘Cutter’ Cutcliffe and standoff Alex Rogers. Dogs Head Coach Simon Blanks identified Steve Cutliffe as playing the best rugby of his life. Cutcliffe is a force in the tight five, but best at prop, where he is ferocious carrying the ball into contact and equally terrifying in tackles. Alex Rogers is the best back on the Dogs and one of the best in Newfoundland. He’s quick with an inside step that can undress experienced defenders. Rogers is a devasting tackler that will drive back even the hardest of inside lines. The Swilers must account for both Cutcliffe and Rogers if they want to host the Goodyear Cup again.

The Swilers have an edge in the back line, with Daniel Lantos at standoff and speedsters in all spots in the centres and back three. Swilers Fullback Patrick McNicholas was the difference maker with 15 points off the boot when the Swilers defeated the Dogs earlier this season.

Notable Swilers are lock Aaron Burrows and standoff Daniel Lantos. Aaron Burrows has been a go to ball carrier in the forwards with deceptively good hands and strength on the ball. At least once a game Burrows catches a ball that leaves everyone wondering what happened. His tackling is rock solid with several bone crunching hits to his name. Daniel Lantos is making a name for himself at standoff with big improvements with every game. He already possesses devasting speed, but his rugby smarts and ball distribution have taken leaps and bounds. He can easily fire a spin pass down the back line or take the hole himself with his pace. The Dogs will need to neutralize both Burrows and Lantos in order to topple the Swilers.
