In the first game, Memorial rugby has played in 24 years on the 30th anniversary of their last Goodyear cup victory, Memorial got off to a tremendous start with Tony Pomroy and Lucas Shortall at 9 and 10 running the game plan (arguably the best halfbacks in Canadian University rugby) MUN proved too much for UPEI with 3 tries in the first 12 minutes and a first-half lead of 40-0.
UPEI put up a spirited second half with tough and direct attach scoring 2 tries of their own before Memorial regrouped to end the game strong.
Jared Gavin was voted by the team as back of the match with 2 tries, secure defence and impeccable kick receipt. Simbarashe Mandoza was voted by the team as forward of the game with hard and aggressive running and defence.
Notable performances by Kieran Lacey and Geoffre Hookey who put in the full 80 hard minutes in the forwards.
Memorial now moves on to face Dalhousie University, lead by Newfoundland’s own James Clarke, in the Atlantic University Championship Sunday, Nov 14 at 10 am.
Final score: 64-12.
