TEAM NL RUGBY 7S CANADA GAMES FEATURE PLAYER OF THE DAY

Name: Jessie Penney

Position: Prop

Club: Swilers RFC

Rugby Roots: Rugby was a big part of my Dad’s life, but even though it was a big part for him, I wasn’t introduced to the sport until I was 15. My Mom never thought one of her daughters would play rugby, but after my first season of club, I knew it was the sport I wanted to play for the rest of my life!

Experience: I started playing rugby heading into grade 10, and I’m headed into grade 12 now. I’ve had two summer seasons where my first summer, my club team, Swilers, won the u19 championships! In the summer of 2021, The Rock Women’s team travelled to New Brunswick, where we placed fourth in the u19 Atlantic championships and then this summer, 2022, The u17 Rock Women’s team placed third! Over the past couple of months, I have travelled to the Atlantic Provinces a couple of times and British Columbia, training for the Canada Games!

Inspiration: I just love this sport so much. I love how rugby is a sport that anybody can play and anyone can love. I love the atmosphere created on a rugby field and knowing that winning or losing every game is worth playing. I’m always excited for the next game, even after playing one. The process of becoming a better player is also something I love. Working throughout the off-season to become a better player can be hard but knowing it will pay off on the field is motivation enough. I aspire to be the best rugby player I can be, and having that goal inspires me every day.

Fun Fact: Aside from rugby, I play school basketball and am on the cheer team! I also have been dancing, singing, and acting my whole life!!
