The Canadian Classics Women’s Rugby team is set to play the Rock Women at the Swilers Rugby Club in St. John’s, NL on August 27th. They bring with them a powerful message for young female athletes. The Classics are past international-level players. They start arriving in St. John’s on August 25th in preparation for their first game as a Classic’s program since initial efforts to form the program 15-years ago. They hope to build on the success of the men’s program, thriving for close to twenty years with two fixtures per year. Team Manager Roxanne Butler stated: “I’m so excited to welcome and host this incredible event and make history by showcasing the highest profile women’s rugby game to be held in the province. These women are sending a powerful message to the young athletes in our Province of the places this game can take you, the amazing friendships you can make (and keep for a lifetime), and the environment to allow athletes to grow and build greater strength and confidence. As Classic athletes they have played and given so much to the sport and are once again stepping up to continue to share the message of how far a young athlete can take her game. This game will be the highest profile women’s Rugby game to be held in the province.” The Swilers Rugby Club is famous for hosting big rugby events for the men including the Canada vs USA qualifier a year ago, but this will be the first time the Canadian women will set foot on the newly renovated grounds called Adele’s Field at the Swiler’s Rugby Club. When asked what she thought of the program, Lauren Smithson offered, “It was such an honour to be part of the Canadian team in the first place and now it’s a pleasure to be able to be a part of that again in the form of this Classics team. It will be great to meet with other professional women who now have careers, families, and experiences and being able to come back together again and play rugby is a unique and special opportunity and I’m extremely grateful to be a part of it. Rugby has always been one of my favourite things in life. Whether it’s watching, playing, or coaching, it’s a game that anyone can play and it gives so much to your life whether it’s a social or a community thing or just for exercise, it makes special friends and opportunities – and as you can see from the Classics team this continues throughout your entire life. I’m proud to be part of this game on Saturday and especially playing in NL where I have been living and working the last six years. I think it’ll be a great experience for everyone involved, as well as all the fans and spectators. It will be a great chance to experience that camaraderie of Rugby once again.” The Classics will play the Rock Women – a newly formed provincial senior team – at the Swilers Rugby Club: Date: Saturday, August 27th, 2022 Time: Kick off is at 4:00 p.m. Get there early to get a good seat!!
