On a cold and windy day in Halifax Memorial Seahawks Rugby battled hard to win the Atlantic Men’s University Championship 32-17 over Dalhousie University led by agile #8 and captain Kieran Lacey.
Memorial struggled with penalties early on that starved them of possession and the ability to extend a lead beyond 15-7 at the half. The Seahawks found themselves in a tight game until scoring a late try by co-captain Sam Newhook to seal the victory and mark a successful return to play on the National stage.
Man of the match for the Seahawks was inside centre JS Cook
Notable performances by Steven Mallard and Evan MacKenzie. Steven Mallard played 80 tough minutes at prop, an impressive feat at any level for a front-row forward and provided a second-half try that helped change the momentum in the match. Evan MacKenzie moved from the backs into the forwards this year and played the full 80 minutes excelling in multiple facets of play.
